The Japanese title for “The Hidden Fortress” literally translates as “Three Bad Men in a Hidden Fortress,” and divining the irony behind Kurosawa’s intention is an adventure unto itself. A grand-scale adventure as only Akira Kurosawa could make one, The Hidden Fortress stars the inimitable Toshiro Mifune as a general charged with guarding his defeated clan’s princess (a fierce Misa Uehara) as the two smuggle royal treasure across hostile territory.
The film is a Jidaigeki with an interesting twist: rather than concentrating on The Hero, the film instead focuses on a pair of bickering peasants, with none of the other major characters putting in an appearance until twenty minutes or so in. Imagine that.

In fact, in my case I decidedly prefer The Lower Depths to The Hidden Fortress, although I still prefer The Hidden Fortress to Rashomon. The Hidden Fortress is, like so many of Kurosawa’s films, Mifune’s movie.
